Japan, 1920 Pinstripe suits and fedoras, Tommy Guns, Cadillac’s and cigars.Welcome to Shinsekai, Osaka.
The New World.
To the south of Osaka’s Minami district a new neighbourhood is on the rise. Heralded as ‘The New World’, Shinsekai aims to be everything Japan is not. With the southern end of the district modelled after New York and Paris the inspiration for the northern half, what originally started out as a collection of small businesses in 1910 turned into a thriving den of sex, drugs, money and music by the 1920’s.
Western culture is the flavour of choice. The wealthy drive Cadillacs, their hats tipped low as they pass hopeful men walking the streets in well-polished wingtips and pinstripe suits. Jazz rules the music scene while the cabaret gals and guys steal hearts in smoke filled clubs. Movie theatres, restaurants and cheap peepshows line the cluttered streets where the sing-song voices of painted women call out from behind paper screens, trying to entice a trick or two.
In the back alleys of Shinsekai, under the shadow of Tsutenkaku Tower and the cable car link to Luna Park, lies Yuuwaku a place like no other. Part Moulin Rouge, part New York Speakeasy, it is a world within itself, somewhere that dreams and fantasies are made and sold, given away to the rich and powerful alongside a glass of whisky and an imported cigar. Wild and lively, full of colour and music, plush couches and crystal glassware, people flock there each night, lining up around the block for the entertainment and pleasures Yuuwaku has on offer.
But for those working and living there, it is a nightmare.
Owned by bonds of debt, each night the employees of Yuuwaku grace the world with fabricated smiles and sounds of delight, the act worthy of Silver Screen awards. They dance, they sing, they pour drinks and lose at cards while flirting the night away.
When the last drunkard stumbles out and the house lights die, the shine and glitter of the night fades back into harsh reality. Bars and locks, guards throughout the day, dirty sheets and peeling plaster; those that work the floor of Yuuwaku never leave.
Daytime is their world, where the flickering florescence light sets the mood for their own destructive tendencies and emotions. It is the only time they can really be honest with themselves and that is never pretty. Patrons have money to spend but for the workers the currency is bitterness, pettiness and black mail. Behind the scenes bonds are made and broken, lives are saved and others are thrown to the wolves as sacrifice.
Everyone wants to be the best, everyone wants to land the spotlight for the night and snare the top paying client. The more money they make, the closer they are to being free and that knowledge has a way of playing tricks with the mind...
